HPV Virus Facts - Treatment
There is no real cure for the HPV virus, but research has indicated the immune system clears the infection over time. Nowadays, the main purposes of treating HPV are to control outbreaks of warts and remove them and also monitor the development of precancerous cells. In about 20-30 percent of infected people, warts disappear on their own within several months. It may happen due to the strong immune system that fights off the virus.
Treatment for warts falls into three categories:
- Topical chemicals that destroy wart tissue. There are several creams and gels that can be used for external warts. Possible side effects include burning, itching, swelling and pain. These methods are dangerous for pregnant women, patients with diabetes and people on steroids.
- Surgery for removing wart tissue includes several methods. The most popular one is cryotherapy, when the warts are frozen off with liquid nitrogen. Electrocautery is a procedure that uses high-frequency electric current to cut the wart off. Other methods of surgical removal involve scissors, laser and scalpel.
- Approaches that are aimed at the virus causing the wart. Interferon therapy is aimed at helping immune system to fight off the virus. A treatment that is applied directly to warts stimulates the immune system to produce interferon for fighting the virus.
