HPV Virus Facts - Subclinical HPV

HPV infection can be symptomatic or clinical and asymptomatic or subclinical. Very often, HPV intrudes the deep layers of skin and multiplies there causing no visible on the skin. So, many people infected with this virus may not know about it. Subclinical strains of this virus may cause serious cellular changes, which can turn to cancer cells, if not detected at an early stage.. Symptoms usually appear 3-4 months after exposure to the virus during the intercourse.

Subclinical genital HPV is especially dangerous for women, but if a woman has regular Pap smear tests, there is nothing to worry about, as it can reveal abnormal cells of the cervix. Early treatment is usually fast and effective, but if the disorder develops into the advanced stage, the consequences may be tragic. HPV is one of the main causes of cervical dysplasia.

HPV Virus Facts - Clinical HPV

Several types of HPV cause anogenital warts; virus types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, and 35 are the most common. Warts can appear externally on the genitals or in the mucous membranes of the vagina, cervix, rectum or urethra. Having oral sex with an infected person can lead to lesions in the mouth and throat. Warts differ in size from very small bumps to large cauliflower-like masses and in color from pink and whitish to dark red and grey. Usually, they are painless, but become itchy when irritated.

Internal warts are more difficult to detect and treat, but most cases don't lead to cancer. Nevertheless, untreated warts can grow into large clusters and spread to uninfected skin areas. Enlarged and ulcerated warts cause significant discomfort, as they often bleed, itch and produce a foul-smelling discharge. Vaginal warts often cause pain during the intercourse and may become a serious obstruction during the labor.
