Colposcopy Procedure




A colposcopy procedure may be necessary to evaluate a human papilloma virus infection causing ASCUS. The complete exam will take only about 20-30 minutes and is performed right in the doctor’s office. Women can prepare for it by emptying their bladder right before the exam and refraining from douching, using tampons, or having intercourse about 48 hours before the appointment. A colposcopy procedure may be necessary to evaluate a human papilloma virus infection causing ASCUS.

A colposcope, which is an electrical microscope, is used to view the cervix after an acidic solution has been applied so that abnormal areas will appear white. From the areas that appear white, biopsies or tissue samples, will be taken using small biopsy forceps or a large needle. A colposcopy procedure may be necessary to evaluate a human papilloma virus infection causing ASCUS.
